  • They’re old or deformed. You can replace individual parts like wheels or toe stops, but if the boots are starting to crack, the skate rubs or slips, or the footpad has an odor that just won’t go away, it’s time for a new pair.

child halloweenIf you need a costume, first you need an event. We’ve got you covered there, too! Teens and tweens will love skating, dancing, and hanging out with friends at Halloween Skate and Dance on Friday, October 28th from 7:30-10:30pm. Want to keep your younger kids “fright-free”? Find the Perfect Skating Costume

First, keep in mind that your kids will be roller-skating, scrambling for candy, and being their silly selves at Fun Spot’s Children’s Halloween Party. Yes, a mini Rubik’s Cube costume may be cute, but you’ll want to plan for costumes that give them a full range of motion. Here are a few other tips to finding an easy kids Halloween costume (without slacking on the cute-factor):

  • Shop thrift stores. You never know what you’ll find!
  • Get creative! You’d be amazed at what you can make with plain clothes and a few simple props. For example: pin pale pink balloons to light-colored clothes for an instant bubble bath. You can also dress your child in all black (ninja), cover them in cobwebs (spiderweb), or paint squares on their face to make a pixelated Facebook photo.
  • Become a DIY master. Does your son love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Paint a disposable turkey pan green and voila! Instant Raphael shell. Is your daughter all about Pokemon Go? Dress her in a red shirt, white skirt, and black belt with a white craft paper circle over the buckle. Pokeball, go!
  • Recycle. Make use of last year’s costume by passing it down to a younger sibling, trading with the neighbors, or adding a few details to make a brand new costume.

Ready to show of your kids’ Halloween costumes in the cutest parade Belleville has ever seen? Don’t miss the Children’s Halloween Party on October 29th.

Improving Your Skating Endurance

stretchingIn order to maximize your skating workout, you want to have as much stamina as possible, right? Right. So the Fun Spot team has put together some easy tips to improving your skating endurance. Take a look.

Stretch – It is important to make sure to stretch before doing any kind of workout and roller skating is no exception. Stretch your legs, thighs, hips and torso-these areas are used the most when roller skating.

Intervals – When building endurance, especially in the beginning, it can be difficult to give it your all for a long time. This is why you push yourself in intervals. Work as hard as you can for about 20 seconds and then rest for 40 to 45 seconds. Repeat the pattern 15 to 20 times. Focus on the intensity.

Weights – When you feel comfortable, add weights to your roller skating workout. You can grab dumbbells or add leg weights. No matter which option you select, you will be building your leg muscles and ultimately increasing your roller skating endurance.

With these quick tips you will be able to take advantage of your roller skating endurance and start increasing it today. When building endurance, be sure to listen to your body and know the signs of exhaustion. Building endurance takes time, so be patient with yourself and keep pushing toward your goal. Preparing To Roll

StretchSome people may not think to stretch before roller skating, however, the American Heart Association recognizes roller skating as a top rated aerobic exercise. That means, stretching before lacing up your skates can help you a great deal. According to Livestrong.com, “ stretching improves flexibility and makes up an important part of an exercise routine.” Take a look at a few stretches the Fun Spot team has found that are good for stretching your hips, thighs and legs before stepping onto the rink.

Quad Stretch

This will stretch your hip flexors, quads and hamstrings. Kneel on floor with both knees bent, shins on floor. Put your right leg forward, so right knee is bent 90 degrees in front of you, right foot is flat on floor directly under knee, and left leg is still bent underneath you, parallel to right. Put both hands on top of right knee and press back hip forward, leaning into stretch, keeping torso upright. Hold for 30 seconds and release. Switch legs and repeat.

Reclining Pigeon

This will stretch your lower back, hips, glutes and hamstrings. Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor. Cross flexed right foot over left thigh, hook arms around left hamstring, and lift left foot a few inches, keeping back and shoulders on floor. Gently pull right leg in toward you, until you feel a stretch; hold for 45 seconds to two minutes. Lower back to start, switch legs and repeat.

Foldover Stretch

This will stretch your neck, back, glutes, hamstrings and calves. Stand tall with feet hip-width apart, knees slightly bent, arms by sides. Breathe out while you bend forward at the hips, lowering head toward floor, while keeping head, neck and shoulders relaxed. Wrap arms around backs of legs and hold anywhere from 45 seconds to two minutes. Bend knees and roll up slowly to release.

4 Skating Games You Have To Play

roller skateEverything is better on roller skates, right? Our team at Fun Spot Skating Center says “absolutely!” Roller skating is a great way to build endurance and get in shape. Check out some cool games to play next time you’re at the rink.

Freeze Tag
Lace up your skates and have fun with friends with this classic game. One person is selected to be the “tagger.” This person goes around trying to tap their friends, while everyone else tries their best to stay away from the tagger because if they are tagged-they’re frozen!
A classic game of limbo, on roller skates! See how low you can go on skates. Don’t touch the stick.
Relay races
Classic relay races are also fun on roller skates. Pick up speed and bring your team to victory!
4 Corners
Everyone skates until the music stops then everyone has to skate to 1 of the 4 corners of the rink. With their eyes closed, one designated person calls out a corner 1-4. If your corner is called out, you are eliminated. The game goes on until only 1 person is left standing.

These are just some of the fun games kids can play on roller skates. It’s a fun way to get the kids moving. Join us this week for Open Skate at the rink. Visit our website for session hours and admission details.

Buying a skates can get expensive and at Fun Spot, we understand that after buying a pair of skates you want them to last awhile. That’s why we’ve put together a few key tips that will extend the lifespan of your roller skates. Check them out!

With the exception of some roller skates, most roller skate trucks should be tightly fitted to the boot. Therefore, skaters should routinely check their roller skate trucks to make sure they are tight and secure.

Many roller skates come with adjustable toe-stops so be sure to set your toe stop is set to the position that works best for you. You may have to experiment with a few adjustments until you determine the right toe-stop position.

Skaters also should occasionally check their skate wheels to make sure they are spinning properly and haven’t become excessively worn. If the wheels are not spinning freely you should check for damage, or buildup from dirt or other debris.

Most roller skate bearings are enclosed and considered maintenance free, however, it is still good to make sure the bearings on your roller skates stay dry and clean. It is good to wipe the roller skate bearings from time to time.

With these quick tips you’re sure to be taking proper care of your roller skates. Roll on!
